These somewhat interesting ‘mushroom’, like landforms are part of the volcanic landscape of Cappadocia, the ‘Land of Beautiful Horses’. Cappadocia lies in south eastern central Turkey, some 275 km south-east of Ankara.
This article should serve as an introduction to what is an exceedingly complex volcanic province and only ‘scratches the surface’ of what is in the locale.
The volcanism in the area and in southern Turkey in general, is associated with the Alpine front orogenic belt with the Afro-Arabian plate moving northwards and being subducted below, the Anatolian sub-plate of the main Euro-Asian plate; the Taurus mountains being the Alpine equivalent. The volcanism, which here began in the Miocene period about 18m years ago and as with most subduction zones, is predominantly of the calc-alkaline type, with arcuate volcanic features. In Cappadocia, the main volcanoes (out of 19 major and many other satellite monogenetic and maar vents) are Erciyes Dag (3916m), Hasan Dag (3253), Melendiz (2963m), Kegiboydoran and Develi; the former 2, being most recent, have had the most obvious effects on the landscape of the area.

Bora – Unquestionably the most mythical of the Pacific islands remains the island of all dreams.

The legends, mysteries, and romance associated with the words “Bora Bora” bring an almost mystical presence to the island. The island, located about 230 kilometres northwest of Papeete, is surrounded by a lagoon and a barrier reef.

Bora Bora is predestined for snorkeling and scuba diving in and around its lagoon.

Made famous by books, movies, and its stunning beauty, the island is now besieged by tourism and overcrowding. Regardless, if you must visit a South Pacific island (and you should), Bora Bora would be an excellent choice.

Transparent Balcony on 103 Floor Skyscraper the Sears Tower, Chicago

Visitors to the Sears Tower in Chicago may find their hearts skipping a beat when they step out on this mid-air ledge. The tower’s latest attraction, called the Ledge, promises a walk on the high side with these new glass enclosures that extend 4.3 feet beyond the side of the building. Beneath peoples’ feet lies the sprawling Illinois city – 103 stories, or 1,353 feet, below.

Designed by SOM, the boxes, which are located on the tower’s west side, and are fully retractable to aid in window-washing, will extend out from the building’s facade. The balconies were added in 2009 to the famous observation floor. Each box is comprised of three layers of half-inch thick glass, and will hold about five tons, well beyond their expected capacity.
Just an inch-and-a-half of glass separates the visitor from the street underneath. The attraction is due to open in June. It is part of a multi-million dollar renovation of the tower – America’s tallest building. For sure it’s not for everyone!  If you are visiting Chicago now you will just have to go and see this modern spectacle.
All of you who have been there do give us your personal impression of standing in mid air. Must be an incredible experience to stand hundreds of feet above Chicago and look out over the city!

Bangalore Metro gets poor reviews from senior citizens

Bangalore:  The Metro has been literally engineered to be 'inhospitable' and 'unfriendly' to its commuters, alleged senior citizens' forums, underlining that the upcoming mass transit system has neither built-in any seating arrangements nor any medical facility on the station premises.

According to the complaint filed by the forums, Metro stations have absolutely no seating space and there are not medical facilities available either. At first glance, the Reach I Metro stations connecting MG Road to Byppanahalli, sure lives up to international standards. But a closer look would reveal the darker side of the sparkling stations.

According to sources, the major flaw at Metro stations is that very few commuters friendly facilities are available there. The soon to be inaugurated Reach I of the Metro has six stations on its 6.7-km stretch between MG Road and Byappanahalli. And each station can accommodate more than 40,000 passengers.
Unapologetic of its 'inhospitable behavior', the BMRCL has now announced that people unnecessarily waiting at the stations will be fined.

This past weekend, I witnessed elephants painting at the Thai Elephant Conservation Center in Lampang, Thailand. The TECC is the first place in Thailand where elephants learned how to paint, and these gentle giants can actually paint incredible works of art. It was one of the most stunning, unforgettable experiences of my life.

But conjoined twins Abigail and Brittany Hensel have not only proved doctors wrong, they have astonished them with their development into darling children, typical teenagers and, lately, beautiful young adults.
Now the 22-year-olds, who share one body fused at the torso, will be starring in their own reality TV show chronicling their graduation from Bethel University in Minnesota, their post-grad job search and their travels through Europe with friends.
